ascii text resume ASCII (pronounced ask-ee) stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It#8217;s the language by which all computers use to talk to each other. So what?s that mean? Computers can only read numbers. Technically speaking, ASCII is a numerical representation of the letters, digits, punctuation marks, and other symbols used in conversational English. It was created in 1968 to allow data processors to ?chat? to one another and, although it?s been upgraded, ASCII continues to be the establishing ?alphabet? almost all computers use to the odyssey topics, communicate. Establishing A Thesis? That said, when a hiring manager asks for an ASCII or ?text-only? version of your r?sum?, all you really need to How are rising rentals, know is that they?re looking for establishing a thesis, an unformatted, plain-text document. ASCII documents do not contain underlining, boldface, italics, bullets, rule lines, graphics, font choices, or any of the formatting pizzazz you?re used to with contemporary word processors. Because ASCII files are content-driven, they usually lack uniqueness and visual appeal. So why would you want to deliver such a ?bare bones? document to someone you?re aiming to impress?

There are several reasons: 1. VERSATILITY. Antigone Tragic Essay Prompt? ASCII documents are universally readable by any computer in the United States. Establishing Statement? Delivering your r?sum? in ASCII prevents compatibility issues between applications. Here are a few situations to demonstrate how file-format incompatibilities can obstruct your candidacy. Situation #1: You deliver your r?sum? in How are affecting, Adobe FrameMaker or Acrobat format, but your target company only uses MS Word. Result: The target company cannot open your attachment and a thesis statement fails to view your r?sum?. Result: The target company will, in this case, be able to open the file. However, your r?sum? will not appear as you intended.

Among other problems, characters unique to the font you used will be rendered as unintelligible symbols. In all cases, it?s unlikely that the company is going to statement, ask you to resend your r?sum?. They?ll just move on to the next candidate. Research Papers On Brown Vs Board? 2. EASE. ASCII r?sum?s can be ?cut #038; pasted? directly into the body of an email message or web-based form, without compromising the establishing a thesis statement r?sum?s format. Datta Phd Thesis? If you tried the a thesis same trick straight from word-processing applications such as Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, or Adobe FrameMaker, you?d sacrifice most of citing source research paper, your r?sum?s formatting as well as introduce ugly line breaks and non-standard characters, making your credentials substantially harder to discern. 3. A Human Resources representative simply forwards your message and the recipient can begin examining your credentials within seconds without having to open a separate program. 8. MARKETABILITY. Sending along an ASCII r?sum?, especially one that?s been edited and laid out carefully, proves you are technologically adept and, in the event that your target company requests such a r?sum?, a good listener. 9. Establishing A Thesis? VISIBILITY. Job boards are a great way to get your r?sum? seen by hundreds, even thousands, of employers. Tragic? These sites almost always require an ASCII version of your r?sum?.

Please note: If you choose to use job boards, you may want to protect yourself by eliminating your street address and personal phone number(s) from your r?sum?. Also, dating the a thesis statement r?sum? is a good idea, since it will inevitably circulate the web for rising, several months. Perhaps you?re still unconvinced that you need an ASCII r?sum?. Chances are ? especially if you?re applying to a larger corporation ? that your beautifully formatted non-ASCII r?sum? will be converted into a plain text file so that it can be scanned more easily by the recipient?s computer system. So why bother to establishing statement, duplicate their effort? Our answer: to improve your chances of being noticed. On Brown Vs Board Of Education? In converting a non-ASCII document, such as an MS Word file, to ASCII, all of the character formatting (font selection, point size, style) as well as the non-character formatting (margin settings, soft line breaks, section breaks, tab settings, graphics, tables) disappear. Establishing? Consequently, your content gets smooshed together into one boring newspaper-esque paragraph. Crucial information gets buried.

Job titles, statistics, company names, and dates all drown in tragic, a sea of undifferentiated text. A Thesis Statement? Although search engines can navigate such a messy document, many hiring managers can?t (or give up quickly after they start). Animesh Datta Phd Thesis? All else being equal, a r?sum? that?s hard to establishing a thesis statement, read (whether it?s your fault or not) results in fewer interviews. To avoid becoming a casualty of corporate r?sum?-processing technology, plan ahead. Convert your r?sum? before they do, so you can correct all of the formatting inconsistencies and beautify the layout as much as possible before the hiring managers see it. Like a fine wine is to a five-star dinner, an ASCII r?sum? is the animesh phd thesis perfect complement to your formatted r?sum?.

It shows you?re aware of how r?sum?s are processed and that you are committed to making your credentials stand out establishing statement from the thesis crowd. POKER FACE: The Rise and research Rise of Lady Gaga. Establishing A Thesis! By Maureen Callahan (Hyperion) The meteoric rise of the Ga -- once known as Stefani Germanotta -- is now documented in topics, her first in-depth bio.

The book covers her from her beginnings at NYU Tisch School of the Arts (what, a tad more than two years ago?) to her cultivation of the establishing statement, hyper-persona that keeps the tragic essay, clubs pulsating -- with dish on her quirks, control freak-outs, messy (already?) love life and what pop music execs originally said (not pretty enough). Statement! 29. Proposal! STORMY WEATHER: The Life of Lena Horne, By James Gavin (Atria) I've had stormy weather all my life, and establishing a thesis statement if anybody can sing about the trouble they've seen, it's this old broad. That's Lena on Lena, the extraordinary diva who attained wealth and world renown despite racism on antigone hero essay, both sides of the establishing statement, color divide (allowed to antigone prompt, sing but not drink at segregated clubs, and, with the exceptions of Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather, She actually had sizable roles in both of these films, only given bit parts in Hollywood films in the pre-civil rights era; and statement criticized by other African-Americans for papers on brown marrying a white man). She makes it through, beauty intact.

Bitterness, too. 28. A Thesis Statement! MARTHA STEWART: Just Desserts, By Jerry Oppenheimer (out of print) Any analysis of the woman behind the decorating dynasty is going to antigone, be a little -- pardon the expression -- dishy. We're talking dirty, dirty dishes, here. This tabloid biographer, known for statement salacious tales (see No.

20), offers the obvious (Martha's a control freak) and the not so (she may have dabbled in wife-swapping). Thesis Proposal Subject! (Credit: Allan Tannenbaum) 26. THE ANDY WARHOL DIARIES. Edited by establishing, Pat Hackett (Grand Central) Not a bio, per se, but biographical, for sure. Warhol dictated daily to Hackett, his secretary, but what started as an expense-account diary became 20,000 pages of catty gossip. Research Paper! When the a thesis statement, edited version hit in 1989 (two years after his death), celebs, socialites and the Studio 54 crowd raced to find their names -- and found they were savagely dissed: Liz Taylor (like a fat little Kewpie doll), Patti Smith (all I could think about was her B.O.), Jerry Hall (underarm B.O.).

Got it, Andy -- they're stinkers. So were you. By Ozzy Osbourne with Chris Ayres (Grand Central) A TELL-ALL (it needs all caps) with something for everyone: sex, cocaine, Black Sabbath, sex, hash, booze, sex, pills, sex, sex, wife beating, MTV, almost killing a vicar (accidentally), nasty moments with chickens and animesh datta cats and . . Statement! . of course . . . the bat -- which, to be fair, he thought was fake when he bit its head off in a 1982 concert. My mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid, with the worst aftertaste you could ever imagine, he writes. Animesh! 24. STAR: How Warren Beatty Seduced America, By Peter Biskind (Simon Schuster) Beatty spoke to author Peter Biskind for this 2010 bio, though he rejected the finished product as unauthorized. Statement! Though his life with wife Annette Bening and their kids was off limits, there's plenty of insight on the hits (Bonnie Clyde, Reds, Heaven Can Wait), flops (Ishtar), politics and all those loves (Natalie Wood, Julie Christie, Diane Keaton -- 12,775 in all, by the author's estimate, including the women in bios No. 16 and animesh phd thesis 27). Which surely makes him Hollywood's most infamous ladies' man -- though he might be tied for establishing a thesis that title (see No. 4). (Credit: Jerry Lewis Films) 23. KING OF COMEDY: The Life and Art of datta phd thesis Jerry Lewis, By Shawn Levy (St.

Martin's) It's not all laughs -- not by a long shot. The high school dropout-turned-megastar and telethon promoter was deserted by his parents, dumped by comedy partner Dean Martin, and plagued by chronic pain, a drug addiction and a suicide attempt. A Thesis Statement! 22. TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL: The Making of a Movie Star. How Are Rising Rentals Affecting! By Tab Hunter with Eddie Muller (Algonquin) If Tab were coming of age today, he'd be a sensation on establishing a thesis statement, Gossip Girl, and thesis subject maybe -- just maybe -- more open about his sexuality.

But back in the '50s, the teen heartthrob had to keep his gay relationships (with Anthony Perkins and others) secret. He finally breaks his silence in this frank (one chapter is titled Happy to Be Forgotten) and establishing a thesis touching 2005 book. Research Papers Of Education! 21. MY FIRST FIVE HUSBANDS . And the Ones Who Got Away. By Rue McClanahan (Broadway) A must-read for establishing a thesis anyone who's ever loved The Golden Girls -- and source research surprisingly engaging, too. Consider this a primer on survival, through career droughts (Love Boat Limbo), breast cancer, six marriages and a May-December romance with Brad Davis. 20. FRONT ROW: Anna Wintour -- What Lies Beneath the Chic Exterior of Vogue's Editor-in-Chief. As we know, there's trash and good trash . . . and this bio lies somewhere in between. Alas, most of Anna's pals and colleagues refused to go on the record, so the 2005 book relies on accounts by random old school chums, ex-beaus, distant relatives and other gripers with mud to sling.

Still, you get a truer sense of what she's like than you do from establishing, a certain lame (if bestselling) novel with Prada in the title. Essay Topics! 19. UNMASKED: The Final Years of Michael Jackson. By Ian Halperin (Simon Spotlight) There are plenty of Jacko books out there, mostly cheesy. This bio -- notable for establishing its quickie production (the publisher bought the unedited manuscript a day after MJ's death and it hit shelves before the burial) -- at least comes from a veteran celeb biographer, albeit packed with scads of unnamed inside sources. The author contends Jackson was gay, occasionally cross-dressed, and wasn't a pedophile but blackmail victim.

Also, he used wife Lisa Marie Presley as a beard. No! Really? 18. Citing In A! STORI TELLING. By Tori Spelling (Gallery) Stupid title -- but a charming read about a tabloid princess. Everyone's fave virgin from 90210 sets the record straight.

No, she wasn't disinherited (not exactly) -- and, yes, Daddy did have fake snow made on the Beverly Hills lawn for Christmas. Twice. A Thesis Statement! By Diana Vreeland (Da Capo) Here's the grande dame of American fashion: poised, meticulous, daring and -- let's get real -- sometimes so over-the-top (pink is the navy blue of India) it's hilarious. (And true.) The former editor of Harper's Bazaar and Vogue recounts her exotic, hothouse life peppered with boldfaced names (Wallis Simpson, Jackie Kennedy, Balenciaga) and lush locales, from Park Avenue to animesh datta, Long Island's Gold Coast, London, Hungary, Morocco and -- believe it or not -- Albany. 16. JUST JACKIE: Her Private Years. By Edward Klein (Ballantine) OK ? journalist (and Jackie pal) Klein is clearly k-k-k-krazy for the Kennedys (having written no less than five books on establishing statement, members of the clan).

Folks seem to love or hate this book and all its insider dirt: Onassis putting the moves on Jackie 48 hours after Dallas; her make-out sessions with Brando; and those rumors about her and Sinatra, or Bobby Kennedy? No, she didn?t sleep with them, Klein asserts. One of the images of Elizabeth Taylor from Liz: An Intimate Biography of Elizabeth Taylor. by C. David Heymann. 14. GRACE: The Secret Lives of research papers on brown of education a Princess.

By James Spada (out of statement print) This 1987 bio with the antigone, sub-subtitle, An Intimate Biography of Grace Kelly, is just that -- a sympathetic tale of a thesis one of the most beautiful and paper mythic (hey, she actually married a prince) women in establishing statement, America. The big reveal: that the rentals, white-gloved, convent-educated, society starlet had her share of premarital sex -- Ray Milland, David Niven and on and on. Establishing A Thesis Statement! 13. HEAVIER THAN HEAVEN: A Biography of Kurt Cobain. By Charles R. Cross (Hyperion) The definitive work on the ill-fated grunge rocker, written by the odyssey essay, a former editor of Seattle music mag The Rocket, authorized by widow Courtney Love and culled from a thesis statement, 400+ interviews and Cobain's unpublished journals. Disclosed: the How are housing rentals, Nirvana front man never lived under a bridge (as one song alleges), he'd talked about his suicide genes since his teens, and as for the Courtney-killed-Kurt rumor -- nahhh. Establishing A Thesis Statement! 12.

OPEN: An Autobiography. This 2009 stunner isn't stocked with the typical megastar mea culpas (sorry about all the sex and drugs). But it reveals, in startling clarity, how much a tennis player as gifted and successful as Agassi can actually hate the game. His exes (ex-wife Brooke Shields and essay ex-rival Pete Sampras) aren't crazy about a thesis, how they get depicted, and datta former No. 1 Marat Safin has suggested Agassi turn in his tennis titles after the book revealed Agassi once tested positive for drugs (crystal meth) and lied about it to tennis officials. Establishing A Thesis! 11.

NO ONE HERE GETS OUT ALIVE: The Biography of thesis proposal subject Jim Morrison. By Jerry Hopkins and a thesis Danny Sugerman (Grand Central) The first biography of Morrison -- the man, the animesh datta phd thesis, myth -- written by a journalist (Hopkins) and establishing a thesis statement an office aide to The Doors (Sugerman). The book idolizes its subject a tad, fans admit. Yet it's candid (he wasn't that great a singer) and comprehensive -- discussing Morrison's rise, music, total rejection of authority and the psychological demons that led to his premature death at 27. By Tina Turner with Kurt Loder (It Books) Her volcanic stage presence and source research paper legs of death mesmerized audiences for decades. Then came this 1986 bestseller, which blew the lid off the decades spent as a victim of domestic violence.

Ike, her ex-husband and rock partner denied the allegations for years, until his own 2001 autobiography. Sure, I've slapped Tina, he admitted. We had fights and there have been times when I punched her without thinking . But I never beat her. Sure, Ike. Establishing Statement! By Christopher Reeve (Ballantine) This memoir, which Reeve wrote in thesis subject, 1998, three years after the tragic horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed, recounts his metamorphosis from Hollywood heartthrob to a thesis, medical research maverick and icon for the disabled. He takes an unflinching look at his WASP-y youth (talk about a dysfunctional family), acting career, political activism and then the phd thesis, family life and paralysis foundation he built with his wife, Dana. 8. HIGH ON ARRIVAL: A Memoir. Establishing A Thesis! By Mackenzie Phillips (Simon Spotlight) The young actress who America watched grow up on How are, the sitcom One Day at a thesis statement a Time was actually exposed at an astoundingly young age to sex, drugs and rock and roll, thanks to her dad, John Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas. This 2009 memoir reveals demons she's battled for decades, from addictions to incest at the hands of her father. Her story, tenderly told (and disputed by stepmom Michelle Phillips), rocked Hollywood.

By Donald Spoto (Cooper Square) The veteran biographer of the odyssey essay Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier and Ingrid Bergman relied on statement, 150 interviews, plus Monroe's letters and diaries, to essay, craft this detailed account of statement a cultural icon. The 2001 book traces her early life (as Norma Jeane), through her various films, marriages, acting coaches and housing affecting addictions. A Thesis! Spoto provocatively sheds light on various rumors and innuendo (like her supposed tryst with Robert F. Kennedy -- not!) and what really happened the night she died. 6. LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS: The Rise of tragic essay prompt Elvis Presley and. Yes, it's two books here, not one -- but it's impossible to decide between the two and, really, they come off as one fascinating read, covering both Elvises -- the cool, up-and-coming hip-swiveler (growing up in Tupelo, recording sessions at Sun Studios, being drafted) and the sequined Vegas chubby.

Released in 1994 and '99, the two volumes are considered the definitive accounts of the life of the King. A Thesis! 5. THE LIVES OF JOHN LENNON. By Albert Goldman (Chicago Review Press) This 1988 unauthorized bio by an academic and music critic is as hefty (720 pages, 1,200 interviews and written over How are rising housing rentals affecting the course of establishing six years) as it is controversial (it's been called a hatchet job by housing, ardent Lennon fans and condemned by establishing a thesis statement, Yoko Ono). The book paints Lennon as a dark, conflicted figure (duh) and sifts through little-known facts about his youth, life with Yoko and post-Beatles years. Antigone Tragic Hero Prompt! Startling allegations include how Lennon took LSD daily, had a gay relationship with Brian Epstein and may have killed a man. There isn't a lot of music analysis but, what -- you're looking for a book that's longer than 720 pages? 4. MY WICKED, WICKED WAYS: The Autobiography of Errol Flynn. It's all here -- obsessions, addictions, divorces and brawls from the greatest of Hollywood swashbucklers. The big question of this 1959 autobiography: How much is a thesis statement true? Some anecdotes have been disputed, but with plot twists that include his pre-Hollywood life as a mercenary, his 1943 trial for rape (he was cleared of the charges) and all that action with the ladies (he spawned the phrase in like Flynn), it's one rollicking ride.

3. HIS WAY: An Unauthorized Biography of Frank Sinatra. Sinatra sued Kelley to essay topics, stop publication of this unauthorized 1986 biography, which dug up the dirt on his abusive marriages, womanizing, hair-trigger temper and a thesis statement ties to organized crime. He ultimately withdrew the housing rentals affecting, lawsuit, and the book went on to become a huge bestseller, forever changing our perception of Ol? Blue Eyes. 2. Statement! DIANA: Her True Story.

By Andrew Morton (Pocket Books) Morton's 1992 bio of Princess Diana exposed her scarily unhappy marriage to Prince Charles and the dysfunctions of the housing rentals affecting, royal family, giving Elizabeth her unshakable rep as an establishing, Ice Queen. It was later revealed that Diana was Morton's principal (and anonymous) source. 1. MOMMIE DEAREST. By Christina Crawford (Seven Springs Press) The Mother's Day card to end all Mother's Day cards. This how-to of maternal dysfunction set the benchmark for essay prompt tell-all tomes written by the offended offspring of freaky celebrities. A Thesis! Written by Joan Crawford's adopted daughter (who Mommie disinherited before she died), this 1978 bestseller told a Hollywood horror story of a tempestuous megastar and the psychological and physical abuse she heaped on her kids.

Grab the 20th Anniversary Seven Springs edition, which includes 100 pages of dirt cut from the original. The 1981 film starred an irrepressibly campy Faye Dunaway. C'mon, let's all say it together: No! More! Wire! Hangers!

Developing a Thesis Statement: Writing Associates Program

essay-answers.com Developed by Joseph Travis, Florida State University. In my courses I emphasize essay answers to examination questions. A Thesis? Some questions are designed for very short answers and others for longer, more complex answers. The questions range in scope and complexity, which is why different questions require answers of different length. Regardless of this variation in length, all of the questions are really short-answer essay questions because no single question requires you to write for 2-3 hours. Writing an effective short answer is a learned skill. The Odyssey Topics? By effective I mean an a thesis answer that is correct and that is succinct.

The succinct attribute is important for two reasons. First, you will be operating under time limits, and you need to use your time efficiently. Second, succinct answers are easier to understand and interpret, and you are more likely to get the animesh phd thesis, credit you deserve with a succinct answer. Thus an effective answer will address the thrust of the question and avoid unnecessary detail and irrelevant information. An effective answer will not do the following: restate the question (which wastes time) list everything that could conceivably be relevant to the question (which not only wastes time but suggests to the grader that you can't distinguish relevant from irrelevant information) place potentially useful statements of fact in random order (which forces the grader to attempt to discern your logic, usually to your detriment) use vague or very general sentences (which forces the grader to a thesis statement guess what you really meant to write) An effective answer will do the following: state the major point as the first sentence (which declares an immediate focus for your answer and inspires confidence in the grader that you know what you are doing as you answer the question) organize supportive or explanatory material to follow the the odyssey topics, major point (which helps the grader understand your logic and the intent of your answer) use specific terms and careful language (which helps minimize ambiguity so that the grader does not misinterpret the meaning of the statement, answer) Effective answers need not be long; indeed, long answers are often bad answers.

A common flaw in essay answers is the writer's inability to communicate the crucial point or, stated differently, separate the facts from their significance. Science is not a collection of dusty facts (or acetone-smeared facts or adjectival facts of research papers on brown, any sort) but a process of critical reasoning, careful experimentation, and insightful integration of apparently unrelated information into a synthetic hypothesis to establishing statement explain natural phenomena. The essay questions require you to perform the first and third of antigone hero prompt, these elements on this small scale. On the following pages, I offer four examples of a thesis, different types of research papers vs board of education, essay questions. Each example uses an actual question that I've employed in one of my courses and includes a short analysis of the establishing, question so that you can appreciate it drawn, as they are here, out of context from the course. For three of the four examples I present genuine answers of varying quality; by genuine I mean answers that were actually written by students on a quiz or examination that used that question. For each answer I offer some diagnostic analysis of its quality. Example 1: A straightforward regurgitation question. Let's look first at a straightforward question that I use in PCB 4673 (Evolution) and analyze why some of the answers are good ones and the odyssey essay others not. Question.

Why was Castle's guinea pig experiment so critical for Darwinian selection? Note. This is a straightforward question for which the correct answer need only a thesis statement repeat what was discussed in citing source research class. Good answer. Castle's experiment showed that selection could produce a phenotype that was beyond the range of the establishing, phenotypic variation that was present at the start of the experiment; it was a novel phenotype.

Critics of Darwinian selection had pointed out, correctly, that there was no evidence that such selection could do more than move a population's phenotype around within pre-set limits. Castle's work showed that selection could produce phenotypes that were outside of the original limits and thus that selection could be a constructive force. Analysis. The writer states first what Castle's experiment showed. She then points out How are rentals affecting why Darwinian selection was not being accepted as a useful mechanism for a thesis, evolution, and follows this statement by reiterating the result of Castle's work in How are rising housing rentals affecting those terms. She did not discuss another implication of Castle's experiment, that natural populations harbored lots of hidden genetic variation, which implied that the rate of evolution would not be limited by the rate of establishing a thesis statement, mutational input. Although this implication is important, the citing source in a research, essence of the question was addressing Darwinian selection and what it could accomplish and establishing statement not the ultimate governor of the rate of vs board of education, evolution. Bad answer. Castle's experiment was critical for Darwinian selection.

Darwin said that selection would work among individuals within populations and Castle showed that this could work. Analysis. The writer first re-states the a thesis statement, question; if doing so helps you focus, that's fine, but the writer appears to have mistaken restating the question for a good topic sentence or a good opening claim. The rest of the antigone hero prompt, answer includes two true statements, that Darwin said . . . and that Castle showed . . . , but of course others had shown that selection could work within populations (indeed, Darwin himself knew this from establishing agronomic records) and that the process could work was not at issue. The contentious issue was its effectiveness. Now the writer might claim that this is what he meant of course, but the answer doesn't say that, and How are rising housing rentals affecting the graders shouldn't be expected to be mind readers. Mediocre answer. Castle showed that if you kept selecting you would cause the phenotype to break through the establishing a thesis, plateau it had reached before. Darwin's selection mechanism was not known to be able to break that plateau and others had tried and failed to do that. Analysis.

A demanding grader would call this a poor answer because it is not specific. There is no clear description of what the plateau is and no clear, unambiguous interpretation of the phrase it had reached before. Before what? Before when? Of course, if one had attended the lecture one could read into antigone prompt this answer the essential elements of the correct diagnosis. A Thesis? We know that the plateau refers to the point at which no further phenotypic change was obtained and that the location of citing in a paper, that plateau was usually at the extreme of the original phenotypic range. But without that knowledge the statement, answer is vague; the student is asking for the grader's indulgence and a bit of essay topics, reading between the establishing a thesis, lines in order to get full credit.

A grader in a good mood, early in the semester, might let this vagueness be acceptable, but do you really want your grade to depend on my mood? Example 2: A question that allows you to choose what to regurgitate. Let's examine a question I've used in the Evolution course that is slightly more difficult to answer. Question. Offer two lines of evidence from thesis proposal biogeography that helped provoke Darwin's (and others of his time) ideas about evolution and briefly explain why they were important. Note. In the lecture I discuss several biogeographic patterns that provoked Darwin and many of statement, his contemporaries to wonder about the idea that the earth's features (physiography, flora, and fauna) were static. This question asks the student to recall two out of those several patterns; any two of antigone essay prompt, them will suffice if the student can also recall correctly the significance of each pattern. The answer is a regurgitation of lecture material, but in this case there are some options about what to regurgitate. Good answer.

First, young islands (younger than the adjacent mainland) had differentiated forms of plants compared to establishing a thesis the same species on the adjacent mainland. The differential ages of the two locations would rule out tragic essay prompt a single creation event so there would have to be either multiple creations, a serious flaw in understanding ages of land masses, or some type of evolution. The volcanic islands of the Galapagos were important for eliminating the second possibility. Second, the anomalous distribution of primitive organisms, which were found in some places but not others, unlike the advanced organisms. These were awfully odd and idiosyncratic patterns of placement for a single creation and there were not traces of differential extinction that would explain it.

Analysis. The student set out two clear lines of evidence, using first and second so that there was no doubt as to where one idea ended and the next began. A Thesis Statement? The student then stated why each line of evidence was important. He did not assert that either line of evidence proved evolution to have occurred (which they don't) but stated why they did not fit the thesis proposal subject, prevailing paradigm of the establishing a thesis, time, which was a single creation event. Bad answer. Papers On Brown Of Education? Many species are different from one island to the next and in fact some occur only on one island. When an establishing statement island is younger than another one and many animals are different then they must have evolved on one or more of them. Skunk cabbage is found only in phd thesis two very different places and this means it had to have evolved twice and not once in any single creation. Analysis.

This answer has a lot of problems. The question asked for two lines of evidence and a clear statement of establishing a thesis, why each was important. Tragic? I count four lines of evidence (two in the first sentence) and there is no clear demarcation of where one line ends and a thesis another begins. The lack of such a demarcation might lead a grader to research of education wonder if the establishing a thesis, student understood the tragic essay prompt, difference or has blurred the distinctions among all of those lines. Let's move on to another part of the establishing statement, answer: in no case can one unequivocally conclude that . . . this means it had to have evolved . . . because these patterns alone are not proof of anything.

In the last sentence the student blurs the distinction between the number of creation events and the number of evolutionary events. Finally, there is no mention of the fact that skunk cabbage is rising rentals affecting a primitive plant, which is vital to the argument. Its puzzling distibution is not terribly germane or interesting; the pattern is in establishing statement the cumulative evidence of the vs board, odd patterns of many, many primitive taxa. Example 3: A question whose answer is regurgitation but that requires some. thought about what, precisely, is to be regurgitated. This example is drawn from the Evolution course (PCB 4673); as in the preceding questions, the answers I've reproduced here are real ones offered by establishing a thesis students in the past.

Question. Explain the meaning of the research on brown vs board of education, statement natural selection is not evolution. Note. This question reflects the most basic points that I make in establishing a thesis the first three lectures in the course. I define evolution and natural selection and take pains to datta phd thesis point out at which level each of establishing, them occurs. Many students enter the course with the idea that natural selection and datta phd thesis evolution are synonymous, which they are not, and I consider it vitally important to disabuse them of this idea at the start of the course. The dilemma many students encounter in answering this question is that they are not entirely sure why natural selection is establishing a thesis statement not evolution. In other words, they might have memorized the definitions but didn't think about the relationship between the concepts. As a result, they aren't sure which definitions can be combined to concoct a correct answer. The key to a correct answer is to appreciate the vs board of education, definitions and the relationships among the concepts that they describe.

Good answer. Evolution is a process of descent with modification at the level of the biological population; selection is one of establishing a thesis, several mechanisms that produce evolution. Good answer. Evolution is a genetic phenomenon and papers selection is a phenotypic one that occurs within a single generation and establishing is only a mechanism of evolution. Analysis. In the first case the student began with the rising housing affecting, definition of evolution; as the second answer reveals, this wasn't really necessary to get full credit, although both writers obviously knew the definition of evolution. The first student emphasized the definition of evolution and the second, the definition of selection, but the essence of each good answer was to distinguish evolution from one of its driving mechanisms.

Bad answer. Evolution is a process of descent with modification at the level of the biological population and natural selection is the nonrandom differential proliferation of phenotypes within a single generation. Evolution can be caused by gene flow and mutation as well as genetic drift. Analysis. Establishing Statement? Here the student repeats the definitions of evolution and natural selection, correctly.

The student continues to the odyssey essay topics state that three other forces can cause evolution, also correctly. Nothing in this answer is incorrect, thanks to the student's diligent memorization of definitions. Unfortunately he did not answer the question except in an implicit fashion, presuming (I suppose) that if the grader read the definitions enough times he/she would realize that evolution and a thesis selection were quite different concepts. This still does not provide a clear answer to the question that was asked. The problem with this answer is that the How are rising, grader must decide whether the student really understands the a thesis, material or is simply regurgitating definitions in proposal the hope that these will be sufficient. Establishing Statement? Given that understanding and critical thinking are what we hope to cultivate here, mere memorization and regurgitation are unlikely to succeed in convincing the graders. Worse answer. In A Research? Natural selection is part of evolution. Analysis.

In some sense this statement is true, but of a thesis, course it is prompt so vague that it could mean almost anything (even something mystical, which is NOT the province of this course). The statement is trivially true and no credit would be given for it. Example 4: A question that requires original thought and has no single correct answer. Let's examine a more difficult question that I've used in my course on Lower Vertebrates (ZOO 4343C). This is the type of question that usually poses the greatest challenge for students. One reason is that there is no single correct answer to parts of the question; therefore anyone who relies solely on memorization of lecture and textual material is likely to be lost immediately. The other reason it's often troublesome is that it requires the a thesis, student to proposal subject recall diverse information from both the establishing statement, lecture and the laboratory portion of the course and synthesize that information for him/herself. I will present the question and instead of offering analyses of good and source research bad answers, describe what is needed to answer the question.

Question. Establishing? Consider four local frogs and tragic hero essay their larval habitats. In temporary ponds we can find Hyla femoralis and Rana areolata, whereas in permanent rivers we can find Hyla avivoca and Rana heckscheri. The two Hyla species are palatable to fish and salamanders, but the two species of Rana are unpalatable to both fish and salamanders. Salamander larvae are never found in the presence of fish and are quite palatable to fish. (a) Design an experiment that would reveal whether the larvae of establishing a thesis statement, each frog species can detect and respond to hero prompt the presence of a predator. (b) Speculate on the results of such an statement experiment for each species if you used the following animals (one at a time) as potential predator stimulants: Fundulus lineolatus Lepomis spp. Leptolucania ommata Ambystoma talpoideum Esox americanus An introduced centrarchid Heterandria formosa Aphredodorus sayanus A dragonfly. (c) Frog larvae are herbivorous, and salamander larvae are carnivorous. Offer one hypothesis to explain why no salamanders are ever observed to live with fish yet some frog larvae are so observed. (d) Parts (a)-(c) addressed the responses of larval frogs or salamanders. Given the facts in hand, should you expect adult female Hyla femoralis to recognize and the odyssey essay respond to the presence of fish in a body of water?

Justify your answer. (e) Several species of frogs have larvae that school, that is establishing that actively associate and datta move as a roughly coordinated unit in the water. Knowing what you know, should these animals be more likely to be found in establishing statement temporary or permanent water? Justify your answer. Note. In the lecture on predator-prey relationships, I describe experiments of the type requested in part (a), so in fact that portion of the tragic hero prompt, question might be considered simple regurgitation. However, even if the student hasn't memorized the actual experimental designs that were reviewed in class, he/she ought to understand the issues well enough to design a suitable experiment.

The fundamental premise is that antipredator behaviors are attributes that have evolved in response to the predators that a species has experienced consistently over its history. Establishing A Thesis Statement? Through the field trips, the students have been to the contrasting habitat types and are likely to have seen most if not all of the taxa mentioned in the question. Thesis Subject? Moreover, they should know which taxa occur in which type of habitat (which is required to statement answer part (b) correctly, or at least with some logical basis). Armed with that knowledge, a student might expect that tadpoles of research papers on brown of education, H. femoralis, which live only in temporary ponds, would be able to recognize and respond to predators in establishing a thesis temporary ponds like dragonflies or the salamander and not to the fish (which don't occur in temporary ponds). Tadpoles of the closely related H. avivoca, which live in rivers, might be expected to respond appropriately to How are rising native riverine fish but not to the dragonfly or salamander. Its unclear what one might expect those tadpoles to do in response to lacustrine fish or an introduced fish species; they might be using a cue that is provided by all fish, or they might use species-specific cues. This is a subtle point, the recognition of which separates the best students from the others. I look for the student to express this uncertainty, not to take a position on one or other side of this issue. The pair of Rana species really just offer the statement, opportunity to repeat the same analysis. Parts (c), (d), and citing research (e) request a speculative answer.

Thoughtful answers require the student to have paid attention to the lectures on ecological relationships and antipredator behaviors and assimilated some of the patterns of statement, habitat associations that I would have pointed out on our field trips. I maintain that the topics, best preparation for an essay examination consists of studying the establishing statement, material as it is phd thesis presented and not attempting to cram just before the examination. In my courses, I also provide a list of review questions, essay-style questions that address the establishing a thesis statement, material to be covered in the examinations. I provide these at the beginning of the course so that the students can use them to guide their studying as they progress in the course. So in other words, a student could peruse the review questions, select those that pertain to each week's coverage, and use those to help discern the critical points in the material. One way to try to improve one's communication skills is to discuss the review questions with other students and develop a consensus about the odyssey essay topics, how they are best answered. One exercise that I have used to help some students is to have them answer 1-2 questions each week in writing and give those answers to me. I return the answers with critique and comment on how they could be improved; these are not graded, so it is a purely voluntary exercise.

How Birth Order Affects Your Child#039;s Personality and Behavior. Whether you're firstborn, middle child, last-born, or only child, birth order can have a big effect on your personality and behavior. How Birth Order Affects Your Child's Personality and Behavior. The one thing you can bet your paycheck on is the firstborn and establishing statement second-born in any given family are going to be different, says Dr. Hero Essay Prompt? Kevin Leman, a psychologist who has studied birth order since 1967 and author of The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are (Revell). But how is it that a gregarious comedian and a reclusive, introspective thinker can be so different yet share the same genes? Psychologists like Leman believe the secret to establishing sibling personality differences lies in birth order -- whether you're a first-, middle-, last-born, or only child -- and how parents treat their child because of it. Meri Wallace, a child and citing source in a research paper family therapist for over 20 years and author of statement Birth Order Blues (Owl Books), agrees. Some of it has to phd thesis do with the way the parent relates to establishing the child in animesh his spot, and some of it actually happens because of the spot itself. Each spot has unique challenges, she explains.

Simply by establishing statement virtue of being a couple's first child, a firstborn will naturally be a sort of experiment for the new parents, a mixture of antigone hero prompt instinct and establishing a thesis statement trial-and-error. Datta? Perhaps this will cause the statement, parents to become by-the-book caregivers who are extremely attentive, stringent with rules, and tragic hero essay prompt overly neurotic about the minutiae. This in turn may cause the child to become a perfectionist, always striving to please his parents. In contrast, if the a thesis, couple decides to have a second child, they might raise their second-born with less of an iron first due to their experiences raising their firstborn. They might also be less attentive to animesh phd thesis the second-born since there's another child competing for attention, and establishing a thesis statement they probably will be less inclined to citing in a research impulsively dial 911 every time the child breaks a sweat.

This may cause the second-born to establishing a thesis be less of a perfectionist but more of a people-pleaser due to citing in a research the lack of attention he gets in statement comparison to his older sibling. In short, it's not necessarily the fact that a child came out of his mother's womb first that he grew up to citing be a leader who talks a blue streak. Establishing A Thesis? Rather, it's the fact that his parents treated him as their firstborn child that shaped his attitude and behavior. As the leader of the pack, firstborns often tend to be: Firstborns bask in their parents' presence, which may explain why they sometimes act like mini-adults. Firstborns are diligent and want to be the best at everything they do. They excel at winning the hearts of their elders. Lori Kiel McGowan, a public health consultant and mother of two boys in Cambridge, Massachusetts, can attest to proposal that. A Thesis Statement? She describes her 6-year-old firstborn son Kiel as a cautious boy who prefers the company of adults or younger children compared to that of antigone tragic hero essay prompt his peers.

For his sixth birthday, we invited six friends of a thesis his choosing, McGowan recalls. For maybe the first half hour to 45 minutes, he crawled into a corner behind a booth and cried. These were close friends from school and after-school and the neighborhood. But after [his cautiousness waned], he came out and had a great time. When presented with a new situation, Kiel's cautious nature manifested itself in temporary introversion.

However, once he became acclimated to his new environment, his caution subsided. Moreover, as for his behavior around his younger brother Fionn, Kiel plays the role of the controlling big brother to a T: He alternately tries to thesis proposal hug him and push him down, or gets a toy or juice for him, and then takes something away to establishing a thesis statement make him scream, McGowan says. It's definitely a sibling love/hate thing. As firstborns grow older, their traits are not necessarily lost. Firstborn child Tracy Rackauskas, a 35-year-old from Denver, fully identifies herself as an achiever. I want to be the best dressed, in a quirky-fashionable way; I want to have the best fantasy football team; I want to be the best editor; I want to be the most insightful and understanding partner; I want to be the sexiest and the smartest and the most interesting, Rackauskas says.

And it's not because I'm really competitive or want to be better than anybody else, but just because I want to be the best. Her ambition carried over to her studies in law school, where she studied all the time and prepared for exams by making her own outlines according to her specific organization system. Citing Source In A? Perhaps in part due to her diligence, Rackauskas graduated summa cum laude and now works as a legal editor, making sure everything that passes through her hands meets her standards. The middle child often feels left out and a sense of, 'Well, I'm not the a thesis statement, oldest. I'm not the youngest. Datta? Who am I?' says therapist Meri Wallace. This sort of hierarchical floundering leads middle children to make their mark among their peers, since parental attention is establishing a thesis statement, usually devoted to the beloved firstborn or baby of the research on brown, family. In general, middle children tend to possess the following characteristics: Holly Schrock, a 31-year-old at-home mother of five in a thesis statement Newtown, Pennsylvania, describes her second-born child Maggie as an attention-getter with a mildly rebellious streak.

You'll say to her 'Go pick up the citing in a research paper, laundry right now' or 'Go put on your bathing suit so we can go to the pool,' and if she's in the middle of something, she'll look at you bald-faced and say, 'No!' Schrock says. However, middle children are the toughest to pin down because they do play off their older sibling, says Dr. A Thesis Statement? Leman. For instance, the sex of the child is a big variable. If the antigone essay, firstborn child is a boy and establishing a thesis statement the middle child is a girl, she may possess firstborn characteristics because though she is technically second-born, she is also the firstborn female. Essay? As the second-born child with an older brother, 4-year-old Maggie also qualifies as the firstborn female in the family, which may explain why she also possesses the nurturing leader qualities of a firstborn child. Maggie likes to be a little mommy, especially to the younger ones. Schrock says. She picks up her 2-year-old brother and tries to tend to his needs in a positive way. She's protective of them.

Schrock herself is also a middle child. Sandwiched between an a thesis statement older and younger sister, Schrock exhibited the same rebellious streak that her daughter Maggie does. I wasn't a bad kid, but I was definitely pushing the envelope a little, Schrock says. In fact, at one point during her teen years, Schrock became embroiled in an argument with her parents that resulted in her running away for three days. Papers On Brown? Though Schrock admits she has since calmed down a bit, she still won't take anyone's guff. I don't like being told what to do, period. Youngest children tend to be the most free-spirited due to their parents' increasingly laissez-faire attitude towards parenting the a thesis, second (or third, or fourth, or fifth. ) time around. The baby of the family tends to essay topics be: Megan, an at-home mom in San Diego, says her 7-year-old daughter Kacey loves the spotlight and will wrestle it away from establishing statement, others, if need be. Kacey loves to go out into our backyard and put on shows, Megan says. How Are Housing? One time she was out there roller skating with her older sister, Jessica, but when Jessica started skating in these pirouettes that Kacey couldn't do, Kacey deliberately fell down to get our attention.

Lastborn child Janice Lee, now 25 years old and working as an architect in New York City, definitely identifies with the simplistic, uncomplicated nature of establishing statement a last-born child. Most girls would die if their boyfriends didn't get them something for their birthday, she says. But my boyfriend and I don't exchange gifts on our birthdays or anniversaries. We're very low-key. Papers Of Education? We'll go out to establishing statement dinner, but nothing extravagant. The Odyssey Essay Topics? Lee also has a pie-in-the-sky, everything will work out worldview: I don't need to have that much security in my life. I like being spontaneous. I moved to Germany from Toronto for a job last year, and I didn't even speak the language, she says.

Being the only child is establishing statement, a unique position in a family. Without any siblings to compete with, the only child monopolizes his parents' attention and resources, not just for a short period of antigone tragic essay prompt time like a firstborn, but forever. In effect, this makes an establishing statement only child something like a super-firstborn: only children have the privilege (and the burden) of having all their parents' support and expectations on their shoulders. Thus, only children tend to subject be: Just one meeting with 5-year-old Lilia, and you'll see. She has a sophisticated sense of establishing humor and is often one of the few girls her age to get a sarcastic remark or double-meaning, says Lilia's mother Razan Brooker, a software business owner in Boston.

Her teachers are very surprised at her level of the odyssey topics understanding of adult humor. Even as a younger child, Lilia exhibited noticeable maturity and diligence. Establishing Statement? Like most children, Lilia sucked her thumb. Essay Topics? But rather than throwing a temper tantrum when asked to break the habit, she agreed to it and threw away her 'blankie,' claiming that is what makes her want to suck her thumb, Brooker says. She then proceeded to make a chart for herself consisting of 30 squares for the number of days she was told it will take her to break the habit. A month later, Lilia was sleeping with her hands by her side. Even when only children reach adulthood, they may not necessarily shed their need to be model human beings, able to run a five-minute mile and establishing cook a seven-course meal without consulting a cookbook. I hosted a Christmas party at my apartment and had to make sure the champagne was chilled, the music was on, the the odyssey essay topics, cats were locked in the kitchen, says Margaret Lloyd, a 27-year-old New York advertising associate. Even after guests arrived, I kept fussing with things, even though it probably took away from some of establishing my enjoyment that evening. Exceptions to Traditional Birth Order Structure.

Blended Families: In the case of subject divorce, remarriage, and the melding of stepchildren, Dr. Establishing? Leman says, blended families don't blend; they collide. Firstborn children who used to be the leader of the pack may find themselves unceremoniously thrown off the top of the hill by an older stepsibling, and the youngest of the family may suddenly have to deal with all the attention that's segued towards the new baby. But despite a child's new position in a blended family hierarchy, he will not tailor his existing personality to his new position unless he is of education, still in infancy. Many psychologists agree that personality develops tremendously during the first few years of a thesis life during the bonding stages.

By about age 5, much of a child's personality has been established (although that doesn't mean it's fixed). Animesh Datta Phd Thesis? In this way, a 10-year-old firstborn will likely have a more difficult time giving up his position as the statement, eldest than a 4-year-old might. Families Within Families: In cases such as with twins, you have a family within a family -- a unit that operates independently of birth order. A twin will never act like a middle-born; he will always act like a firstborn or a baby, Leman says. Since twins are perceived as a single unit -- likely even referred to as the topics, twins -- they separate themselves from the traditional family and revel in their special position. Gap Children: According to Leman, if you have a gap of at least five years in between births, another family begins in the birth order structure. A 2-year-old boy with a newborn brother and a thesis an 8-year-old older sister isn't going adopt middle-child traits, but rather those of a firstborn. Adoption: The same scenario occurs with adopted kids. The age at research papers, which the establishing a thesis statement, child is adopted is a key factor in which traits the child is most likely to exhibit. The younger the antigone tragic hero essay, child is at adoption, the more time he will spend under the adoptive parents' care and adopt his position in the existing family tree. A Thesis Statement? For instance, if a firstborn 1-year-old is on brown vs board of education, adopted by a family with a 4-year-old child, the establishing a thesis statement, adopted child will likely fall into antigone tragic hero essay prompt, the role of the baby, despite the fact that he is establishing, biologically a firstborn child.

However, if a firstborn child is 7 years old when he is adopted into rising rentals affecting, a family with a 10-year-old child, the adopted child will still act like a firstborn even though he has an establishing a thesis statement older brother. Thesis? You don't give up being a firstborn, says Leman. You take the birth order with you. Peers vs. Siblings vs. Parents: Who Influences? Recent studies suggest that siblings may be the key players in forming a child's personality. Other experts insist that peers have the magic touch. To date, researchers are unable to a thesis statement pin down the essay topics, definitive shaper of a child's personality, but there is establishing, one thing that remains constant in all competing theories: Most children have a parental figure to latch onto and learn from. Though peers, siblings, genes, and circumstance all indubitably play into how a child's temperament develops, I think the parents still are the major influencing factors because, truthfully, the first year of life is the bonding with the primary caretaker that impacts upon self-confidence, trust, the ability to research vs board interact with another person, says therapist Wallace. Now, whether or not this primary caretaker is a thesis statement, actually the biological parent is negligible, considering the increasingly changing definition of the modern family.

Instead, it's the experiences shared by child and parental figure that leaves the citing source research paper, lasting impression. Fear not, supposedly manipulative, attention-hungry youngest children! Psychologists agree that personality is not fixed by statement birth order. You can consciously make a choice [to change], says therapist Wallace, who outlines three basic steps to becoming a new you: Make a connection with your behavior and your position in the family hierarchy. Do people always call you a neurotic nitpicker just because you always have to have things done just right? It may not be your fault, Perfectionist Firstborn. Identify how you feel because of it.

Your 4-year-old wants to wear a purple sweater, blue jeans, and orange boots to school. Antigone Tragic Essay? But trying to statement talk your kid out of rising housing rentals affecting looking like Rainbow Brite is a futile battle, and the daily fight in the morning leaves you exhausted. Deliberately change your behavior. No matter how much you want to a thesis dress your child like a cover girl (or at subject, least not like a mini Courtney Love), restrain yourself from criticizing her outfit. If you think about it, it won't kill you to let your child exercise some choice in her wardrobe, and may even encourage her to establishing a thesis be more independent and antigone prompt creative in the long run.
